How long does it take?

Tai Ji Quan places great emphasis on “Form”, which traditionally comprises 108 movements. This is called the long form or Da Man Quan.

Its practice gradually strengthens and reshapes the body from the inside out. It is both physically and mentally demanding, requiring a high level of postural accuracy and concentration.

Its beneficial effects are realised once competency with the early sections of the form are achieved. It is however many years before it is useful as a martial art, and strict training is required for this.

Students progress at their own pace, some training on a daily, others on a weekly basis. The traditional form however remains the basis and the essence of Tai Ji and its study is the primary goal. To learn the form takes approximately 12 months depending on personal practice.

The form is the basis of all further Tai Ji study.

Tai Ji requires no special equipment, and Qi Gong requires little space, so students can practice with ease when away from class for extended periods. Classes are tailored to suit each individual student, and therapies are available for support as the student progresses.

Tai Ji Quan is an “art’ and not everybody is suited to its particular demands. The best way to find out is to try it. Be open-minded and have no pre determined expectations. Try it, it may surprise you!
