What is Tai Ji Quan?

“All Tai Ji Quan is Qi Gong, but not all Qi Gong is Tai Ji Quan!”

Taiji Quan is generally translated as ‘Supreme’ or ‘Ultimate’ Boxing and as its name suggests, it is a comprehensive Chinese martial art of the ‘internal school’. It is a precise and rewarding discipline that trains both body and mind and offers significant health benefits.

It is a treasure and once learned properly can be practiced into old age. You do not have to be a martial artist or a gymnast to study or benefit from Tai Ji Quan.

All Tai Ji Quan study begins with the Big Slow Form comprising 37 martially derived movements strung together in a long continuous flowing form. Sometimes called ‘meditation in movement’ it is practised slowly to train the correct postures and mind-set, to promote relaxation and the free continuous flow of internal energy.

It is the foundation for Taiji as a health practice and as a martial art.
